Real Talk # 1: Vectors of Adverse Desire: bb, do you notice the things getting in your way? i touch myself first in order to re-member. viscosity through the body until I become the space itself. undoing shame by naming the shame directly. is watching porn bad? does something else exist in the underground of your desire? language drip drips dripping as you find pulsing pleasure practice partners on the dance floor. yearning for...myself? again and again.

ABOUT RANDY REYES | randy reyes (they/them) is a queer, AfroGuatemalan choreographer, performance artist, and healer born in New Jersey (Lenape territory) and is now based in the San Francisco Bay Area (Ramaytush Ohlone, Yelamu territory). reyes is interested in choreography as a process of edging, incremental risk-taking, excavation, task as meditation, psychosomatic state work, Qi energetics, and getting messy by conjuring contemporary rituals within quotidian and natural landscapes. As a survivor, they are interested in deepening their relationship to their own body through prayer, divination, writing, and BE-ing as concrete practices that expand and allow for channeling, emptying out, time traveling, and accessing various temporalities and subjectivities of the erotic. reyes also explores the notion of club spaces as sites of generative dissonance and asks, “Are we celebrating or mourning or both? How do we prepare for that which has not yet arrived?” reyes is currently a 2020 Creative Capital Grant Awardee for their project Encuentro 33: LINE/AGE - Queer Neurocognitive Architectures Hidden in Plain Site(s) and is currently living in Lisboa, Portugal as a participant of the Advanced Performing Arts Programme (PACAP 4) through Forum Dança.
ABOUT POWER SHIFT | POWER SHIFT: Improvisation, Activism, and Community invites artists and activists to share the practice and performance of improvisation. Co-curated by Cherie Hill, Hope Mohr, and Karla Quintero, POWER SHIFT brings you inside the improvisational practices of Black/African American, Latinx/Latin American, Asian American, female-identifying and queer improvisers and social justice activists. The program highlights voices from African dance, jazz aesthetics, social and street dance, contemporary forms, and Capoeira.
POWER SHIFT is about more than performance. A wide array of intensives and workshops at the intersection of dance and social action offer opportunities to build and share tools for the creative process. In these spaces, we will move and imagine together. We will cultivate power and resilience in the face of shifting and uncertain landscapes.
